Kriminalomsorgens utdanningssenter KRUS – The Correctional Service of Norway Staff Academy

The Staff Academy (KRUS) is the centre of expertise for correctional services in Norway. Their tasks are to provide specialized training for prison and works officers, offer further education and in-service training for the close to 3000 employees of the correctional service, carry out research and provide information on the service.

KRUS has three departments:

  • The Department for Basic Training consists of the Prison College, which offers a two-year basic training programme for all prison officer candidates in Norway, and the Works Officer Training Programme which offers six months of specialized training for works officers;
  • The Research and Development Department contributes to the development, based on knowledge and experience, of correctional services through research, evaluation and instruction;
  • The Administration Department is responsible for joint services such as the hotel for course participants, financial, human resource, office support, computer network, and the web site http://www.krus.no.

The Centre for Training and Specialization for the National Administration of Penitentiaries' officers– Arad

The Centre for Training and Specialization for the National Administration of Penitentiaries' officers– Arad, founded in 1997, is a professional training institution which serves the penitentiary system. Arad Centre belongs administratively to the Arad Prison (as concerns staff and budget). In terms of professional activities developed there, the Centre is totaly independent.

The activity of this centre focuses on providing specialized training, preparing and improving the professional preparation of penitentiary system officers. Currently, the centre has the following facilities: educational spaces, accommodation spaces, library, office area, trainers' office, physical education spaces.

The Arad training centre is the main beneficiary of this financing and will be involved directly in the rehabilitation and appropriate equipping of a part of the training and accommodation spaces. Moreover, the Arad Centre will be involved in developing and implementing educational tools, programs and curricula, as deliverables of the project. As the centre functions since 1997, the experience and expertise of the prison staff involved is highly opportune.
